Summer might not be the most obvious gifting season, but it's packed with opportunities for small businesses to stand out, especially if you sell physical products. With a little creativity (and some clever wrapping!), you can turn summer occasions into sales and help customers choose your products to tick that gift off their shopping list.

Here are five gift-giving occasions to make the most of this summer:
1. International Friendship Day – 30 July
Friendship Day is a lovely moment to encourage your audience to celebrate the people who matter most. Whether it’s a small pamper treat, a handmade gift, or a little token of appreciation, this is a great chance to promote items that feel thoughtful without being over the top. You could even run a giveaway and encourage your followers to nominate a friend to receive a product as a gift!
2. Summer Birthdays
People with summer birthdays (including yours truly!) can often get a bit overlooked with everyone off on holidays. Why not help your customers change that? If your products make great birthday gifts, shout about it.
Create “ready-to-wrap” bundles, offer gift wrap as an add-on, or share some themed wrapping ideas.
3. Weddings (and Pre-Wedding Celebrations!)
From bridal showers to hen parties and big-day gifting, summer is wedding season. If your products work well as thank-you gifts, favours, or something special for bridesmaids or in-laws, now’s the time to highlight them.
Show how they can be wrapped in a way that aligns with the couple’s wedding theme whether that’s rustic and natural or modern and glam. You could even partner with a local wedding supplier for a styled shoot or cross-promotion.
4. Exam Result Congratulations
August brings exam results for Highers, A Levels and GCSEs. This is a golden opportunity for celebration gifts from self-care treats to motivational keepsakes.
Messages like “You did it!” or “Proud of you!” help your audience celebrate their loved ones’ achievements. If your products appeal to parents or grandparents (who are the likely buyers), speak directly to them in your messaging.
5. Thanks for Looking After the Pet/Garden/House
Summer holidays mean one thing: calling in a favour from your lovely neighbour! Whether someone’s fed the cat, watered the plants, or kept an eye on the house while your customer was away, it’s a perfect moment for a small thank-you gift.
