5 Reasons Why Plastic-Free Packaging Can Help You Attract Customers

Updated: Jul 24

If you’ve been thinking about switching to more eco-friendly packaging, there’s no better time than now, because it’s Plastic Free July.

This global movement encourages people (and businesses!) to cut out single-use plastics for the month, and it's the perfect opportunity to take a fresh look at your product packaging. Whether you sell candles, skincare, handmade crafts or thoughtful gifts, how you package your items plays a huge role in how customers see you and remember you.

Now before you worry that you need to overhaul everything overnight—you don’t. You can start with one or two small swaps. Every step away from plastic is a step forward, and your customers will notice and appreciate the effort. In my business Giftwrapped by Eve I am moving away from stocking wrapping products that are wrapped in cellophane. I haven't been able to swap everything at once as it takes time to research suppliers and run down existing stocks so I have been changing product lines one at a time.

Going plastic-free can actually make your products more desirable and can help you attract the kind of customers who love what you do and want to support businesses that have being eco-conscious as a core value.

What swaps can you make to go plastic-free?
What swaps can you make to go plastic-free?

1. Eco-conscious shoppers are actively looking for you

More customers are now shopping with sustainability in mind and your packaging can either attract or deter them. Using plastic-free packaging, for example paper tape, helps your business show up as an option that aligns with eco values and gives people following this path another reason to choose you.

2. It builds trust and credibility

When a customer opens a parcel that’s wrapped without plastic, it instantly signals that you’ve thought about more than just making a sale. You’re showing you care about the impact your business has and this is a value that is becoming increasingly more important.

3. It adds to your brand story

Plastic-free packaging isn’t just “less waste”—it can be a design choice. Kraft paper, tissue, natural twine, fabric wraps, and even dried flowers can say something special about your brand.

You don’t have to overhaul your whole packaging setup straight away. Start with one small swap that feels achievable and build from there.

4. You’ll attract social shares and repeat customers

Going plastic-free turns your parcel into a shareable moment that eco-conscious customers will want to tell others about . Doing this part of the customer journey well will encourage them to shop with you again.

5. It helps future-proof your business

Packaging is changing, and customers are evolving too. Taking steps now to reduce plastic in your business helps you stay ahead and adapt with confidence.

You might even discover new suppliers, lower-impact materials, or more creative ways to wrap your products—all of which can make your business stand out.

This Plastic Free July, take the next step—your way

Whether you’ve already made some swaps or you’re just starting to explore your options, this month is a brilliant time to review your packaging and take action. And remember, it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. One swap at a time is more than enough.

I love how you emphasize eco-friendly packaging! Small changes really make a difference. Using sustainable options like paper, fabric wraps, or even custom drawer boxes can enhance your brand story while reducing plastic. Thoughtful, creative packaging not only attracts eco-conscious customers but also makes products more memorable and shareable.
