If you run a business, you’ve probably heard the phrase: “If you’ve got a great product, it will sell itself.”
It sounds reassuring, almost comforting. All you need to do is have a well-made, high quality product and it will fly off the shelves!
But in reality? It’s not quite true.
Yes, having a brilliant product absolutely matters, but if people don’t know about what you offer, they won't be able to buy from you! Prefer to listen? Check out Episode 30 of The Greener Gifting Gang podcast.

The Myth of the Self-Selling Product
Many small business owners fall into the trap of believing that a good product will naturally attract customers without much effort.
But sales rarely happen by magic. Behind most purchases is a connection — a moment where someone heard about the product, asked a question that led to a recommendation or shared something they were struggling with.
These moments of connection help to build:
Awareness
Trust
Relationships
Opportunities
Without conversations, even the most beautiful or innovative products can remain hidden.
Are you having enough conversations so that people really know about your products?

Conversations Look Different Than They Used To
When many people think about sales conversations, they imagine busy networking events or crowded rooms.
But conversations in business have evolved.
Years ago, many of my conversations happened face-to-face. Back in 2012, when I started my cards and stationery network marketing business, I spent a lot of time chatting to other mums while I was out and about with my young children.
These days, many if not most of my business conversations happen online instead. And that’s not a bad thing.
In fact, the online world allows us to connect with far more people than we could ever meet in person — all without leaving the house.
A single day online might include conversations through:
Social media comments
Direct messages
Group discussions
Online networking events
Every interaction builds your visibility and helps people get to know you and your business.
Are You Being Social on Social Media?
One of the biggest missed opportunities for small businesses is treating social media like a noticeboard instead of a conversation.
Posting content is great, but on its own it isn't enough. Social media was designed to be social — which means interactions matters just as much as the content itself.
Ask yourself:
Are you commenting on other people’s posts?
Are you replying to the comments on your own posts?
Are you joining conversations in relevant groups?
These small actions help people recognise your name, understand what you do, and start to build familiarity and trust with you.
Avoid the Two Social Media Traps
Many business owners fall into one of two traps when it comes to social media conversations.
Trap 1: Avoiding it altogether
You might feel too busy or unsure what to say, so you don’t engage at all.
Trap 2: Endless scrolling
You open social media with good intentions… and before you know it, half an hour has disappeared.
A simple solution is to schedule short, intentional blocks of time to engage.
Even 10–15 minutes can be enough to:
Leave thoughtful comments
Reply to messages
Join conversations in groups where your ideal customers spend time
It doesn’t need to take hours: consistency matters far more than quantity.
Conversations Don’t Always Need an Agenda
Another helpful mindset shift is remembering that not every conversation needs to lead to a sale. Sometimes the best connections happen when you’re simply checking in with someone.
A quick message to say hello.
A comment on something interesting they’ve shared.
A supportive reply in a community group.
These small interactions build genuine relationships — and often lead to opportunities later on.
Online Networking Can Open New Doors
One of the most powerful ways to have meaningful conversations is through structured networking.
Recently, I hosted my first online networking session specifically for product-based businesses called The Gift Connection. I created it because I realised there weren’t many networking spaces designed specifically for people who sell physical products.
The session brought together a lovely variety of businesses, from handmade items to books and home products.
During the hour together, we had small breakout conversations where people could chat in a relaxed way. Some shared their products, others talked about their business journeys, and everyone had the chance to connect with new people.
In just one session, dozens of conversations took place that wouldn't have happened without the session - that’s the power of intentional connection.
And the best part? Everyone joined from their own home!

What Could More Conversations Do for Your Business?
If you’re feeling stuck or invisible in your business, conversations might be the missing piece.
More conversations can lead to:
New customers
New collaborations
Fresh ideas
Support from people who understand your business journey
Even more importantly, they remind you that you’re not building your business alone.
Join the next session of The Gift Connection
If you’d like a friendly space to meet other product-based business owners and start some new conversations, I’d love you to join the next session of The Gift Connection on Friday 24th April, 11:00am – 12:00pm
It’s a relaxed online networking hour where you’ll meet other product businesses in small breakout conversations. There’s no pitching — just genuine connection, support and conversation.
Spaces are limited so that the sessions stay friendly and conversational; because sometimes the best opportunities start with something simple:
A conversation.
