Plastic Free July is a great time to take a fresh look at the single use plastic in our lives including how we package and wrap our gifts—whether for loved ones or customers. One small but mighty swap that makes a big difference? Ditching plastic tape and switching to paper tape.
If you have ever wrapped something in kraft wrapping paper only to finish it off with shiny plastic tape you’ll know how it can slightly spoil the look. Did you know that it can also make a difference to it's recyclability too?
Here’s why paper tape is such a brilliant eco-friendly alternative:
Recyclable and biodegradable – You can leave it on when recycling paper wrap.
Better for the planet – It often uses natural rubber or water-based adhesives, so there’s less synthetic waste.
Practical and easy – it can be teared from the roll and it's yes, it holds just as well.
It looks intentional – paper tape gives your packaging a cleaner, more natural feel.
What to look for in a paper tape:
Plain kraft brown or white (avoid anything glossy or plastic-coated)
Water-based or solvent-free adhesive
Bonus if it's made with recycled paper!
You can even find rolls with lovely prints or messaging if you want to add a branded or decorative touch.
I use paper tape from Cascayde for my own gifts, my workshops and in my pop-up shop.
A small change that speaks volumes
If you sell products and use gift wrapping as part of your packaging, this tiny detail helps your unboxing experience tell a greener story. Customers notice when your packaging aligns with your values—and paper tape is an easy, low-effort step that adds to that consistency.
And for home wrapping, it’s just a satisfying change that feels better than peeling off plastic tape and binning it.
